In light of the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) recent negative opinion on the use of sodium saccharin in animal feed, particularly for suckling and weaned piglets, the EU Commission has banned its use according to the RG EU 2024_1727. The EFSA raised concerns about environmental pollution, especially the presence of 4-hydroxysaccharin in groundwater, and potential health risks to users handling the additive. This report, issued on January 13, 2023, highlights serious environmental and safety issues, prompting immediate action to find a safer replacement.
With the ban of current sodium saccharin-based products, the focus has shifted to finding and validating an effective viable substitute. Sugarex NEO, our novel adapted formulations for piglets, use NHDC as its primary sweetening agent. NHDC stands out as one of the few sweeteners allowed for animal nutrition within the EU, offering a promising solution to maintain feed intake and palatability.
