Costa Rica: Slaughter grows steadily in first half of 2026

Costa Rica’s swine industry closed the first half of 2026 on a strong note, driven by a more than 8% increase in hog slaughter and accelerating imports.

Hog slaughter

Hog slaughter in Costa Rica totaled 445,436 head in the first half of 2026, representing an 8.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
Specifically for June, 75,697 head were slaughtered, up 6.7% from the same month last year and down 2.4% from May.

Imports

Pork imports during the January-May 2026 period totaled 15,736 metric tons, representing a 3.9% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
In May, imports totaled 3,687 metric tons, 30.0% higher than the same month last year and 21.8% higher than April.

Costa Rica: Per capita consumption of pork exceeded 21 kg in 2025

At the end of 2025, per capita pork consumption stood at 21.3 kilograms per person, the highest level in the past 14 years, placing the Central American country fourth in regional per capita consumption, behind only Mexico, Uruguay, and Chile.
