Beginning January 1, 2027, pigs on Alberta farms participating in the CPE program must not be fed feed containing:

  • Rendered porcine bone-containing meal, including Porcine Meat and Bone Meal (PMBM).
  • Porcine spray-dried blood-fractionated products, including Porcine Plasma or Serum Derivatives.

The change follows extensive consultation with Alberta CPE producers and engagement with industry stakeholders. Alberta Pork worked with the Canadian Pork Council to introduce the new requirement in response to producer concerns about herd health and potential disease transmission risk.

The new requirement is designed to strengthen on-farm biosecurity by reducing potential pathways for disease transmission through feed. It also reflects the industry’s continued commitment to protecting Alberta’s swine herd, supporting long-term sustainability and maintaining confidence in the province’s pork sector.

Before the new requirement takes effect, participating producers must:

  • Update their CPE manual by replacing the current Section 3.2 – Feed: Rations and Additives chapter with updated Alberta-approved version.
  • Review feed used on the farm, including ingredients, complete feeds, supplements and premixes, to ensure prohibited porcine-derived ingredients are not being fed to pigs.
  • Obtain a signed Letter of Guarantee from feed suppliers confirming that feed and feed ingredients supplied for pigs do not contain restricted ingredients.
  • Update the Rations Used On-Farm Record (R-R or R-R1) so that all feed sources, ingredients, additives and suppliers are accurately documented.
