The Sensor May Not Be the Weakest Link

Better sensing does not automatically create better decisions.

A sensor can capture temperature, water flow, feed use, activity, coughing, or ammonia levels.
A camera can estimate weight, detect lameness, or flag behavior changes.

But between signal and action, something critical happens:

Sensor → Data → Information → Interpretation → Decision → Consequence

Many systems invest heavily in the left side of that sequence.
Far fewer strengthen the right side.

If data is read without context…
If the relationship between signals is not understood…
If timing is ignored…
If teams react to isolated numbers instead of system patterns…

then more sensing may simply produce faster confusion.

The weakest link may not be the sensor.
It may be the interpretation.

Technology can expand what the farm is able to see.

Operational intelligence determines what the farm is able to understand.

Question:
Before adding more sensors, are we also improving the way we interpret what they are telling us?

A number can be correct and still lead to the wrong conclusion.

In pig production, data rarely speaks for itself. Context, timing, relationships, and what happened upstream all matter.

Before reacting to a result, it is worth asking:

What am I really looking at?
