The Brazilian government and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) launched the Innovation Hub – Inter-American Knowledge Exchange Platform for Agriculture, a scientific intermediation system aimed at disseminating the technologies developed by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Company (EMBRAPA) throughout the Americas.
EMBRAPA, a state-owned company created in 1972, has 41 research centers in Brazil and has been instrumental in transforming the country into a global agri-food powerhouse in recent decades. The new Hub aims to accelerate technology transfer to other countries in the region facing similar challenges in productivity, sustainability, and food security.
The launch, held at the IICA Representation in Brasilia, was attended by Brazil's Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, André de Paula; EMBRAPA President Silvia Massruhá; and IICA Representative in Brazil, Gabriel Delgado. De Paula stated that the knowledge generated by EMBRAPA should not be restricted to Brazil, but should reach countries facing similar challenges in agricultural sustainability and productivity.
Delgado argued that many countries in the tropical belt lack the technical knowledge that Brazil developed to produce food while preserving natural resources, and suggested that the path taken by Brazil in the last 50 years —from importer to major agricultural exporter— can be replicated in other nations of the region through programs that strengthen both agribusiness and family farming.
The IICA indicated that the Hub will function as a bridge for countries interested in developing agricultural research institutions to connect with EMBRAPA's technical capabilities.
