The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MAGP), through the Agency for Regulation and Control of Plant and Animal Health (Agrocalidad), has vaccinated 1,346,020 pigs against classical swine fever (CSF) as of mid-July, out of a planned target of 2,060,450 animals. The campaign, which runs from November 2025 to October 2026, is part of the Program for the Control and Eradication of Notifiable Animal Diseases (PROSAN), with an annual government investment of USD 534,503.
CSF is caused by a virus of the genus Pestivirus, family Flaviviridae, of which there is only one serotype. The disease is listed as a notifiable disease by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), which underscores the importance of controlling its spread in the region.
To carry out the campaign, 350 field workers from 19 operators are deployed across the country’s 23 provinces, supported by 98 Agrocalidad technicians responsible for monitoring the effort. Vaccination is mandatory, and each vaccinated animal is individually identified, which allows for its traceability and enables its transport to animal collection centers.
Health authorities recommend that producers be alert to clinical signs of the disease, which can present in an acute form—with fever, loss of appetite, purple discoloration of ears and extremities, and mortality in 1 to 2 weeks—or in milder and even inapparent forms.
The Ecuadorian government reiterated that the prevention, surveillance and control actions seek to protect national pork production, food security, and the competitiveness of the sector in the face of the disease.
