Monitoring of Farrowing (III): Factors that increase stillbirths
Long farrowings increase mortality, and deaths occur above all in the last 1/3 of the delivery.

Management of farrowing objectives to achieve optimal piglet weight at weaning (II): batches every two weeks
The dispersion of matings described in the previous article is even more drastic on farms operating in bands over one week.
Hormone management V: Using altrenogest to restore the metabolic state of weaned sows
When gilts were mated at a little more than 100 kg, productivity at 2nd parity had a huge decline and the sow was never able to reach their maximum potential.
Replacement planning and altrenogest management using spreadsheets
In the last chapter on hormone management we looked at the advantages of “a la carte” altrenogest treatment as opposed to the 18 day treatment used to synchronize gilts.
Management of farrowing objectives to achieve optimal piglet weight at weaning (I): weekly batches
Wouldn’t it be great if all the sows on a farm (weaned sows, gilts, repeat breeders…) could be mated on the same day?! And if we were able to choose, on Mondays?
Management of hormones (IV): Using altrenogest
In this chapter the use of progesterone derivatives to modify the duration of estrus in sows is explained.
Monitoring as a management tool
Monitoring should be used as a useful management tool. A drop in feed or water consumption could predict an outbreak of disease allowing early intervention.
Pfizer Trainee of Year Awards for pig and poultry industries
Two young workers progressing to management on a Midlands outdoor pig unit and on a Suffolk duck farm are the winners of the 2011 Pfizer Trainees of the Year Awards.
Farrowing Monitoring (II)
A good result in stillbirths is difficult to achieve without inducing farrowings.
Monitoring farrowing (I)
In this chapter we will present the farrowing stages and how to control it.
Campaign 'Welcome to 2013' informs sow farmers about feeding stations
From 1 January 2013 all sow farmers in the EU will have to house pregnant sows in a group. In order to give a clear and complete picture of the options relating to group housing using pig feeding stations, the information campaign ’Welcome to 2013’ will be launched in September.
Thermal control of piglets in the farrowing pen (IV)
In this chapter we will consider the benefits of closed nests and the importance of temperature regulation according to the age of the piglets.
New tool on pig333.com, a water medication calculator
pig333.com presents a new section: water medication calculator. This tool calculates the quantity of medicine to incorporate in water when using a flow dispenser.
Thompson's tip: Lighten up for breeding sows
He points out that it is also important to ensure the weaned sow and service area is well lit, i.e. to an intensity of at least 200 lux and on a 16-hour light, 8-hour dark pattern.
Stimulation during insemination: The Danish perspective
In Denmark the most common practice is to always stimulate with the boar together with a complete 5 point pattern of stimulation carried out by the inseminator.
Thermal control of piglets in the farrowing pen (III)
In this chapter we will take a look at the use of heat lamps and how to distribute heat inside the pen.
