Marcelo Gottschalk

Prof. Marcelo Gottschalk obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree followed by a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Montreal. Since 2002, he has been a Full Professor in the Department of Pathology and Microbiology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Montreal (Canada).

A leading figure in swine infectious diseases, Prof. Gottschalk has received 15 national and international awards in recognition of his scientific contributions. In 2018, the University of Ghent (Belgium) awarded him the title of Doctor Honoris Causa for his outstanding career and influence in veterinary microbiology.

He serves as Director of both the International Reference Laboratory for Swine Pleuropneumonia (Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae) and the North American Reference Laboratory for Streptococcus suis, two internationally recognized centres supporting diagnostics, surveillance, and research for the global swine industry. His expertise has also been sought by major international bodies: he is a scientific consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO) on S. suis zoonotic infections and for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on swine health.

Prof. Gottschalk’s impact in the field is reflected in global bibliometric rankings: according to Expertscape’s PubMed-based algorithms, he is ranked among the top 0.01% of authors worldwide in human and veterinary streptococcal infections, identifying him as a worldwide expert.

His scientific output includes over 500 peer-reviewed publications and more than 300 professional and outreach articles, covering bacteriology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnostics, and vaccine development. He has supervised numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, contributing significantly to training the next generation of veterinary microbiologists.

A highly sought-after speaker, Dr. Gottschalk has delivered more than 400 invited lectures in 37 countries, participating in major international congresses, specialized symposia, and continuing education events. His work has had a major influence on the understanding and control of Streptococcus suis and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae worldwide.
