The South African pig industry stands as one of the most structured livestock sectors on the African continent, having undergone a remarkable transformation over the decades. According to FAO 2023, South Africa is currently the highest exporter of pork in Africa and also the second highest producer of pig meat in the African continent, underscoring it's importance and the need to examine it's development as a model for other regions of Africa. This videocast titled “The Evolutionary Journey of South Africa's Pig Industry: Key Drivers, Achievements, and Prospects,” will provide an historical overview of South Africa's pig and pork industry, tracing it's evolutionary journey and a comprehensive examination of how the industry has progressed from traditional and smallholder systems to the current commercially competitive sector.
