Vilsack named to lead U.S.D.A.

President-elect Barack Obama held a press conference today to nominate former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack as Secretary of Agriculture. Mr. Vilsack headed governor groups focusing on biotechnology, ethanol and Midwestern issues, and he eventually led the Democratic Governors Association. He also headed the Democratic Leadership Council, a group characterized as "moderate leaning" that was prominent under former President Bill Clinton. Since ending his presidential bid, Mr. Vilsack has held a number of positions, including one at Iowa State University’s Biosafety Institute. There he had a role in analyzing the risks and benefits of agricultural (plant and animal) biotechnology.

EU - Commission Regulation 1249/2008 on the implementation of the Community scales for the classification of beef, pig and sheep carcases

This Regulation lays down detailed rules for the implementation of the Community scales for the classification of beef, pig and sheep carcases and the reporting of market prices thereof. Member States may now decide not to make application of the Community classification scale of pig carcases referred to in Article 42(1) of Regulation (EC) No 1234/2007 obligatory in all slaughterhouses.

USA - USDA promotes 840 animal ID tags

The 840 AIN is truly one number with many uses.”

USA - Nanotechnology may be used for food safety

A microscopic biological sensor that detects Salmonella bacteria in lab tests has been developed by an Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientist and university colleagues. The sensor could be adapted to detect other foodborne pathogens as well.

China - Most feed free of melamine

After examining 22,700 batches of animal feed in the country, only 2.39 percent were found with excessive melamine content, the National Feed Office, under the Ministry of Agriculture.
