Back home after an intensive week in Slovakia – working with 4,500 sows and a fantastic team

This week I had the opportunity to work hands-on with a large 4,500-sow DanBred herd, using free-farrowing systems.

Most of the employees are Slovakian, but the team also includes several other nationalities. Among them were three African employees who had previously worked in Denmark

It was especially nice to see that the experience and knowledge they gained in Denmark can now continue to be used in another European country – and that they have been given the opportunity to continue developing within pig production.

During the week, we spent many hours together in the farrowing unit, focusing on:

Sow management and care
Feeding curves
Colostrum management
Doing the right thing at the right time
Structured work plans
Teamwork and communication
And all the small practical details that make a big difference in everyday production

For me, hands-on training is not about standing outside the pen telling people what to do.

It is about working together with the team, understanding their daily challenges and finding solutions that actually work in practice.

It has been an intense week with long days in the barn – but also a week filled with great energy, ambition and people who genuinely want to improve

I didn’t see much of Slovakia…

But that wasn’t really the plan
