Genetic improvement

It is the improvement obtained between generations, and it is normally specified for only one trait. For instance, if after a genetic improvement program we accomplish, through the selection of animals, that the offspring is superior to the parents with respect to a certain trait (for example Average Daily Gain), there has been a genetic improvement, and it has been positive. The genetic improvement can also be negative in case that the offspring has lower yields than those of their parents.
