The WelFarmers project was presented at the 77th EAAP Annual Meeting, held in Hamburg, Germany, from 7–11 September 2026.

The project was first presented to the EAAP community in its first year at the 2024 Annual Meeting in Florence, where Amy Quinn and Paolo Ferrari introduced the project and its objectives. As WelFarmers approaches its conclusion, it was a great opportunity to return to EAAP and share some of the results and insights generated throughout the project.

During Part 1 of the session “Resilient pigs in resilient farming systems – health, welfare and robustness in practice. How to cope with changing expectations and legislation”, Neil J. Tirchett presented an overview of the WelFarmers project, its methodology and the winning practices identified through the project. This presentation was entitled “Participatory identification of feasible pig welfare innovations to support resilient farming systems under evolving EU legislation”.

In Part 2 of the session, Mariana Almeida presented “Castration alternatives in European pig production: Welfare outcomes, technical feasibility and adoption trends”, drawing on information collected from the WelFarmers Regional Networks in relation to the castration theme.

A valuable opportunity to share the work of our consortium, exchange knowledge with the scientific community, and contribute to discussions on the future of resilient European pig production.
