The European Food Safety Authority has reported a significant increase in African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks across the European Union in 2025, affecting both domestic pigs and wild boar populations. According to the agency’s latest annual epidemiological report, outbreaks in pig farms rose by 76% compared to 2024, reaching 585 outbreaks, while ASF cases in wild boar increased by 44%, exceeding 11,000 detections — the highest figure recorded since 2021.
Romania once again accounted for the majority of outbreaks in domestic pigs, representing 81% of all outbreaks reported in the EU. Increases were also observed in countries such as Croatia, Estonia and Latvia.
Meanwhile, ASF continued to spread among wild boar populations across several Member States and neighbouring countries. Poland accounted for nearly one in three outbreaks (31%).
