Nigeria has opened its market to a broader range of U.S. beef and pork products, marking a significant expansion in market access for the U.S. red meat industry. Previously, only a limited range of processed meat products could be exported to Nigeria, but the new arrangement allows most U.S. red meat products unless specifically excluded.
The products that remain ineligible include beef and pork offal, bone-in hams, and smoked, dried or cured beef and pork. However, beef cuts and most pork cuts can now be exported to Nigeria, providing U.S. suppliers with access to a large market of more than 240 million people.
The development is seen as an important opportunity for the U.S. red meat industry, despite potential challenges in establishing a presence in Nigeria’s retail and foodservice sectors. The expanded access is expected to create long-term opportunities for trade and further strengthen the commercial relationship between the two countries.
