The HI97702 portable photometer is for measuring copper in a wide variety of water samples. HANNA portable photometers feature an advanced optical system; the combination of a special tungsten lamp, a narrow-band interference filter, and a silicon photodetector ensures accurate photometric readings every time. Hanna's exclusive CAL Check™ function uses NIST-tradeable standards to verify both the validation and calibration of the meter.
The unique cuvette locking system ensures that the cuvette is inserted into the measuring cell in the same position every time to maintain a uniform path length. Due to its malleability, thermal and electrical conductivity, and corrosion resistance, copper is used in a variety of industrial and technological applications. Copper can also be present in natural waters and effluents due to its widespread use for controlling biological growth in reservoirs and distribution pipes. The HI97702 colorimeter uses an adaptation of the USEPA-approved bicinchonate method to measure copper concentrations below 5.00 mg/L (ppm). When the reagent is added to copper-containing samples, the sample changes to a purple hue; the higher the concentration, the more intense the color. The associated color change is analyzed colorimetrically according to Beer-Lambert's Law. This principle states that light is absorbed by its complementary color, and the emitted radiation depends on the concentration. For higher copper levels, a narrow-band interference filter at 575 nm (yellow-green) allows the silicon photodetector to detect only the green-yellow light and omit all other visible light emitted by the tungsten lamp. As the color change of the reacted sample increases, the absorbance at the specific wavelength of light also increases, while the transmittance decreases.
