The Tanzania Pig Farmers Association (TAPIFA) convened its first-ever Pig Farmers Conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, bringing together delegates from across the globe to address key issues and challenges facing the pig industry.

Among the topics discussed were the ongoing outbreak of African Swine Fever and worm infestations, as well as animal nutrition and management.

The conference, held from 11 to 13 September, 2025 in Dar es Salaam, concluded with recommendations for continuous sensitisation of farmers on controlling ASF by adhering to biosecurity measures from the farm to the final consumer. Experts emphasised that effective disease control requires keeping pigs in clean pens and feeding them with safe, high-quality food.

During the event, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries highlighted the growing importance of pork in the Tanzanian diet, noting that the country’s pig population has reached approximately 4.1 million. The Ministry stressed that the industry must be sustained and strengthened to ensure consistent protein supply and the promotion of quality farming practices.
