The Federal Government has announced plans to fully upgrade the Benue Swine and Crop Improvement Project located in Yadev, Gboko Local Government Area. During a site visit to Akperan Orshi Polytechnic, the Minister of Livestock Development, Alh. Idi Maiha, expressed satisfaction with the current setup and revealed that the government aims to transform the project into an integrated piggery farming and processing initiative.

The farm, which currently houses 79 pigs, will be upgraded to operate at its full capacity of 3,000 pigs. It will serve as a reproductive centre producing piglets for outgrowers, and will also introduce advanced genetics to expand beyond the current three breeds—large white, duroc, and landrace. A modular processing unit for pig meat packaging is also planned.

Maiha emphasized the use of technology, improved genetics, and feed availability to enhance productivity. The farm will double as a training centre and support cooperative-driven outgrower systems. He also announced plans to revitalise the poultry sector and develop pastures in Benue, acknowledging the state's strong role in agriculture as the nation's food basket.

Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe, Director General of the Benue State Bureau for Livestock Development, welcomed the initiative, highlighting the cultural and economic significance of pig farming in the state and pledged the state’s commitment to leveraging the Federal Government’s support.
