The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Livestock Development, has reiterated its commitment to strengthening disease surveillance and response within the country’s livestock sector.

This renewed commitment was announced during a high-level meeting held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, which brought together National, Regional and State Coordinators, Directors of Veterinary Services, Technical Experts, Farmers’ Associations, and Development Partners, among other key stakeholders.

According to the Ministry, proactive surveillance and rapid response systems are essential to effectively combat livestock disease outbreaks and protect farmers’ livelihoods. The meeting aimed to intensify national efforts in disease prevention and control, ensuring that Nigeria’s livestock industry continues to contribute significantly to food security and economic growth.

Stakeholders agreed on the development of a six-month action plan across livestock clusters and value chains to address pressing challenges and deliver quick, measurable outcomes.

The Ministry also emphasised the need for widespread dissemination of the Animal Disease Control Act and related regulations, to enhance awareness and compliance among livestock farmers, veterinary officers, and value-chain actors. This it said, would improve coordination and preparedness in managing future outbreaks.

Experts noted that sustained collaboration between the Government, Private Sector, Development Partners, and Farmers’ Cooperatives will be crucial in achieving a more resilient and disease-free livestock sector in Nigeria.
