Nigeria’s Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has launched a campaign to strengthen the control of African swine fever (ASF) and improve biosecurity practices among pig farmers at the Oke-Aro Pig Farm Estate along the Lagos-Ogun axis. The intervention included the distribution of disease-control and biosecurity materials to farmers in the major pig-producing cluster, which has experienced previous ASF outbreaks and significant losses.
Beyond supplying materials, the campaign would train farmers on practical disease-prevention measures, including proper farm disinfection, the use of protective equipment, movement control, farm hygiene and other good management practices. The initiative emphasises that effective biosecurity depends not only on access to appropriate materials but also on farmers having the knowledge and skills to use them correctly.
The materials distributed included personal protective equipment, boots, gloves, nose masks, protective goggles, knapsack and motorised knapsack sprayers, as well as CID 20 and Virocid disinfectants. Farmers were also advised to regularly disinfect their farms and strictly control the movement of people, pigs, vehicles and equipment between farms to reduce the risk of disease transmission.
The Oke-Aro campaign forms part of wider L-PRES efforts to strengthen animal health, improve disease prevention and control, and protect the livelihoods and investments of livestock farmers in Nigeria.
