The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing evidence based policies to modernise Nigeria’s livestock sector and position it as a major driver of national economic growth. The assurance was given during a courtesy visit by the High Commissioner of the Republic of Botswana to the Ministry of Livestock Development in Abuja.
The Ministry emphasised the need to move away from outdated production systems toward structured reforms that enhance productivity, value addition and sustainable livelihoods across livestock value chains. Nigeria expressed readiness to adopt lessons from Botswana’s livestock success.

The Botswana delegation highlighted the country’s decades long success in livestock development, attributing it to strong governance, deliberate policies and extensive farmer support systems. Areas identified for potential collaboration include improved livestock genetics, modern abattoir operations, disease management, veterinary services, vaccine production, traceability systems and sustainable grazing management, as both countries explore pathways to strengthen regional and global competitiveness.
