The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has launched a nationwide baseline study aimed at strengthening data driven growth and improving monitoring across Nigeria’s livestock sector. The initiative is designed to establish a credible evidence-based framework for tracking performance, guiding policy decisions and supporting investment planning within the industry.
This study covers 67 key result indicators and seeks to assess the current state of livestock production nationwide. The Ministry says the exercise reflects the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and results focused governance in line with national development priorities.

Using a mixed methods approach, this study combined secondary data analysis with Focus Group Discussions and Key Informant Interviews to capture both quantitative and qualitative insights from stakeholders across the livestock value chain.
The assessment adopts a broad value chain approach covering cattle production for beef and dairy, poultry production, piggery, sheep and goats, micro livestock, feed and fodder systems, as well as veterinary services, logistics and market infrastructure. This approach recognises the livestock industry as an interconnected ecosystem critical to Nigeria’s agricultural economy.
Field activities were conducted across six states selected to reflect the country’s geographical and production diversity. Stakeholders engaged during the exercise included livestock producers, pastoralists, ranch operators, processors, traders, marketers, input suppliers, service providers and regulatory institutions.
While Focus Group Discussions provided direct insights into production challenges and market trends, Key Informant Interviews gathered expert perspectives from government officials, technical specialists and private sector stakeholders with extensive industry experience.
The Ministry stated that the findings of the study will be released in the coming weeks and are expected to serve as a benchmark for measuring sector progress, improving coordination and supporting targeted interventions across the livestock ecosystem.
