A young German intern working at agriculturalist Winni Metzger’s piggery in Kanyikama village, Kavango West of Namibia has encouraged more Namibians to venture into pig farming, describing it as a profitable and sustainable business opportunity.
Speaking while 21 pig carcasses purchased by African Meat Supplies were being loaded for delivery, she said pig farming generates good returns in Germany and has similar potential in Namibia. She noted, however, that success in the sector depends largely on proper nutrition, emphasising the importance of feeding pigs balanced rations that include maize, wheat, soya, grass, limestone, vitamins and amino acids to support growth, health and efficient metabolism.
Building on this, her fellow intern highlighted the productivity potential of the enterprise, revealing that the farm currently maintains around 370 pigs and that a single pregnant sow can produce up to 18 piglets.
Together, their remarks underscore the economic potential of pig farming in Namibia and highlight the importance of good feeding practices and herd management in achieving profitable production.
