The County Government of Vihiga has issued an advisory over a suspected outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in Sabatia Sub County, Vihiga County, Kenya. A pig farm in Vokoli sub-location, North-Maragoli Ward, has lost 16 pigs out of a herd of 73, with the deaths occurring between July 20, and August 6, 2026 after the animals showed signs of ASF. A further six pigs are showing symptoms, raising concerns about the possible spread of the disease.
To contain the suspected outbreak, farmers have been urged to quarantine pigs in enclosed structures, halt movements between farms, markets and slaughterhouses, strengthen biosecurity, sanitise footwear and clothing, cook feed thoroughly and report pig deaths immediately. Carcasses should be disposed of safely under veterinary supervision, while traders and transporters must comply with movement restrictions and thoroughly disinfect vehicles, equipment and crates before and after transporting livestock.
Pork consumers have also been advised to buy meat only from verified outlets, check for official inspection stamps and avoid pork from pigs that died from unknown causes or were slaughtered at home. These measures are intended to prevent further transmission and protect the county’s pig population and farming economy.
