Sunyani Central Prison in Ghana has launched a piggery project aimed at equipping inmates with practical livestock farming skills while boosting food production and generating additional income for the facility. The initiative forms part of the Ghana Prisons Service's 'Think Prisons 360 Degrees' rehabilitation programme, which promotes vocational training and agricultural development.
The project began with six pigs, comprising three mature pigs and three piglets. Through hands-on training, inmates will learn pig husbandry and livestock management, providing them with valuable skills that could support self-employment and sustainable livelihoods after their release.
In addition to enhancing rehabilitation, the project is expected to generate revenue for the prison and supply quality pork to improve the nutrition of both inmates and staff. Prison authorities believe the initiative will strengthen reintegration efforts by preparing inmates for productive lives after completing their sentences.
