The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, has launched a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening disease prevention and control measures to tackle the persistent threat of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Nigeria.
The initiative focuses on enhancing ASF prevention and control through practical outcome-based training for pig farmers, veterinarians and other relevant stakeholders in Akwanga, Nasarawa State.
To ensure proper alignment, several activities were undertaken which includes; the validation of the National African Swine Fever Control Strategy, training of participants on its implementation, strengthening on-farm biosecurity, improving animal husbandry practices and building national capacity for ASF surveillance and emergency response. The ultimate goal is to reduce the impact of ASF across the pig value chain.
Prior to this launch the FAO had previously trained Pig Farmers and Stakeholders in the value chain on Biosecurity protocols and proper Husbandry practices where they visited the Oke Aro Pig Settlement in Ogun State near Lagos, Nigeria.
