The Ashanti Regional Veterinary Director, has expressed concern that many pig farmers are refusing veterinary officers access to their farms, making it more difficult to monitor and control African swine fever (ASF).
‎
‎She said many farmers wrongly assume that visits by veterinary officials indicate a suspected disease outbreak and fear their pigs will be culled, leading them to deny access. As a result, the Veterinary Services Directorate has struggled to collect accurate data on pig populations and strengthen disease surveillance across the region.
‎
‎Speaking at the Ashanti Regional Pig Farmers and Processors Association General Meeting in Kumasi, She stressed that veterinary officers visit farms to provide education, training and technical support, helping farmers protect their investments rather than destroy their animals.
