AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine in Ghana, has commissioned a modern Piggery production centre at Sanso in the Obuasi Municipality to promote sustainable livelihoods and reduce communities’ dependence on mining activities. The initiative forms part of the mine’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), which seeks to create long-term economic opportunities within its host communities. The facility is expected to enhance pig production, improve food security, create employment opportunities across the Obuasi Municipality and Obuasi East District. The commissioning ceremony attracted traditional leaders, government officials, agricultural experts, community representatives, beneficiaries and development partners.

‎Speaking at the event, the Director of Sustainability Management at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, stated that the project reflects the company’s commitment to creating lasting value beyond mining. He also emphasised that agriculture remains a central component of the company’s community development strategy, alongside initiatives such as the Climate Resilience Oil Palm Plantation Programme (CROPP), Farmers’ Day support activities and the Piggery and Aquaculture Programme launched in 2025.

‎He revealed that the pilot phase of the piggery programme recorded remarkable progress, with nine beneficiary farmers increasing their combined pig population from 173 to 428 animals, representing a growth of approximately 171 per cent and the success of this pilot project subsequently informed the establishment of the centralised production facility. The newly commissioned centre consists of 20 modern pig pens, office and storage facilities, quality breeding stock and a fully solar-powered energy system designed to support climate-smart and environmentally sustainable farming practices.

‎AngloGold Ashanti invested approximately GH¢2.86 million in the project, including GH¢1.49 million for construction and GH¢1.37 million for furnishing the facility, procuring breeding stock, providing veterinary services, delivering training programmes and supplying feed support for beneficiaries during the first six months.

‎The project was executed by local contractor, reflecting the company’s commitment to supporting indigenous businesses, building local capacity and creating employment opportunities. Management of the facility has been handed over to the Obuasi Municipal Co-operative Pig Farmers and Marketing Society Limited, whose members have received training in modern pig production, animal health management, record keeping and cooperative governance to ensure the long-term sustainability of the enterprise as the Chief Executive of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, commended AngloGold Ashanti and also urged members of the cooperative to work collectively to maximise the project’s impact, manage the facility responsibly and improve livelihoods within the community.
