Zimbabwe advances Pig Industry towards Genetic Excellence
The Permanent Secretary, Professor Dr. Obert Jiri, officiated at the Pig Handover Ceremony held at the Pig Industry Board (PIB) in Arcturus, marking a major stride in advancing Zimbabwe’s pig industry towards genetic excellence, productivity, and competitiveness. The event celebrated the importation and distribution of 194 high-quality breeding pigs from DanBred South Africa, a collaborative initiative between Government, farmers, and the private sector aimed at modernising the national herd.
Professor Dr.Jiri commended farmers for inspiring the Board’s renewed coordinating role in mobilising resources and facilitating collective importation, which enables cost-sharing and access to superior genetics. He underscored that improved breeding and genetics are central pillars of the Livestock Growth Plan (2021–2025) and essential for achieving higher productivity and export competitiveness.
Aligned with the Agriculture and Food Systems Rural Transformation Strategy II (AFSRTS II), the PIB is envisioned as a lead institution in driving pork self-sufficiency and rural industrialisation through advanced breeding research, feed innovation, and farmer capacitation
