The South African Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has suspended restrictions on Disease Management Areas (DMAs) in Eastern Cape and Limpopo after successfully containing the spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).
The DMA restrictions, implemented since 26 July 2024, were part of measures to control the outbreak. During this period, authorities conducted 144,424 vaccinations to curb the spread of the disease.

Before lifting the movement restrictions, an extensive serological surveillance was carried out within the DMAs to ensure there were no undetected pockets of FMD.
The government affirmed that the decision to suspend the restrictions was based on scientific evidence confirming the containment of the disease in the affected provinces.
