South Africa and Germany have signed a joint Declaration of Intent on Agricultural Development to enhance cooperation in controlling foot-and-mouth disease and promoting trade in animal products. The agreement marks renewed diplomatic engagement between the two countries and aims to strengthen biosecurity and disease management across the livestock sector.
The partnership focuses on key areas including knowledge sharing on outbreak prevention, improved biosecurity systems, wildlife surveillance, vaccine research and advanced diagnostic tools. These measures are expected to support more effective containment of foot-and-mouth disease and also improve resilience within livestock value chains.
Beyond immediate disease control, the agreement establishes a framework for long term collaboration in agricultural innovation, skills development and trade expansion. It is expected to enhance both countries’ capacity to respond to animal health threats while supporting sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.
