In South Africa, the Randburg branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) responded swiftly to an urgent call for help, rescuing 17 pigs and piglets in distress. Although farm animals are not typically accommodated under the Suburban Shelter’s Provisions, the organisation improvised to ensure the animals’ safety.

Speaking on the rescue, the Randburg SPCA stated: “These 17 pigs came to us in need, and while we didn’t have a perfect set-up ready, we made a plan.”

The challenge, however, has prompted the SPCA to set its sights on establishing a more permanent solution. The organisation has now launched an appeal to raise R20,000 towards the construction of a proper open-air shelter designed specifically for farm animals in need, with a particular focus on providing a safe haven for pigs with nowhere else to go.

This initiative marks a significant commitment that will shape the Randburg SPCA’s efforts for years to come.
