The just concluded PigX2 Congress held in Pretoria, South Africa, from 31 July to 1 August 2025, brought together industry professionals and veterinarians from across the continent to discuss pressing issues in the swine industry. The event was organised by the South African Pork Producers Organisation.

A major focus of the Congress was the growing consumer demand for improved animal welfare in pig farming. Speakers emphasised that animal welfare is no longer optional but a critical factor in shaping the future of the swine industry in Africa.
Discussions also explored the concept of the "Meat Paradox," where consumers enjoy eating pork and consider it part of a healthy diet, yet express discomfort over the possibility of animal suffering behind meat production.
Highlights from the Congress included:
Animal welfare is a mainstream concern, not a niche issue.
- Consumer decisions start at the farm level.
- The industry must balance cost pressures with welfare expectations.
- Education and building trust are essential for progress.
The Congress concluded with a call for stakeholders to prioritise humane practices in response to evolving consumer expectations.
