In a bid to combat livestock diseases, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development in Nigeria organised a three-day capacity-building workshop for federal and state Veterinary Epidemiology Officers on Good Emergency Management Practice (GEMP) in animal disease detection and control.
Declaring the workshop open on Tuesday, 21st October 2025, the ministry noted that the GEMP framework provides a structured model for managing animal health emergencies.
The training, organised by the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project, a World Bank-funded initiative under the ministry in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), focused on empowering officers to build a resilient animal health system aligned with international standards.
Participants were urged to seize the opportunity to strengthen surveillance, early warning, and rapid response capacities across states, stressing that disease-free zones are vital for accessing global meat markets and safeguarding national food security.
