Sequel to the outbreak of African Swine Fever within Awendo town and environs of Kenya, the Migori County authorities have enforced the quarantine notice of "No Movement of Pigs" in and out of Awendo sub-county.

The County Executive Committee in charge of Agriculture and Livestock while declaring the quarantine notice said; the outbreak was as a result of an alarming increase of scavenging animals with the county. Hence the rapid spread of ASF in the region was opined to have affected pig movement, sale of pork and associated products.

However, investigation shows that the outbreak has linked its rapid spread within the region to poor management practices and as such the restriction on movement of pigs was necessary to curb and manage the outbreak.

Therefore, farmers are urged to adopt optimum Biosecurity measures and improved farming methods with the view to protect the region from ASF attacks and in turn minimize economic losses.
