Sogakope in the South Tongu District has been placed on code red following confirmation of the first cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) by the Accra Veterinary Laboratory of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

The Veterinary Services Department (VSD) has urged pig farmers to strengthen biosecurity measures immediately in order to prevent the spread of the disease to neighbouring districts and other parts of the Volta Region, where swine production is a major economic activity.

So far, more than 200 pigs have died as a result of the outbreak. Stakeholders have been called upon to collaborate in curbing the situation, while farmers have been advised to strictly adhere to guidance from veterinary authorities.

The Veterinary Services Department is expected to intensify surveillance, enforce quarantine protocols, and provide guidelines for the safe disposal of carcasses to prevent further spread of the disease.
