Pig farming is a promising agribusiness venture in Kenya, supported by rising pork demand, opportunities for smallholder farmers and relatively short production cycles. However, sustainable growth depends on improved breed selection, proper feeding, disease prevention and effective farm management to boost productivity and minimise losses.

‎According to the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), the country has nearly 981,000 pigs, with annual pork production estimated at between 23,000 and 40,000 tonnes, against a projected demand of 38,500 tonnes in 2025. Pork demand is also expected to increase by 125 per cent by 2030, highlighting significant opportunities for expansion.
‎
‎Smallholder farmers account for approximately 80 per cent of Kenya's pig population, making them central to meeting future market demand. Researchers emphasise that achieving sustainable sector growth will require the adoption of improved production practices that enhance animal performance, feed efficiency and herd health
