Pig farmers in Namibia have been urged to closely monitor feed usage and production costs to improve efficiency and competitiveness. The advice was given during a Pig Producers Association of Namibia information session in Windhoek, where producers were encouraged to measure the cost of each kilogram of weight gain and adjust management practices to optimise growth.
Farmers were also advised to provide pigs with diets suited to their different growth stages. Piglets require nutrient-rich feed to support organ development, while growers need diets that promote muscle growth. Finishers require less energy as their growth rate slows, helping to prevent excessive fat accumulation, while sows should be maintained at an appropriate body condition to support milk production.
The session also highlighted a knowledge gap within Namibia’s pig industry, with farmers encouraged to attend training sessions and use online resources, including artificial intelligence, cautiously as an additional source of information. As the pig sector continues to grow compared with other livestock industries, producers were urged to follow proper vaccination programmes and strengthen biosecurity measures.
