Dead piglets found in a pond and surrounding bush in Malema, Sea Vista, have raised concerns over pig welfare, poor keeping conditions and the improper disposal of animal carcasses. Animal welfare concerns include inadequate shelter, water and sanitation, as well as pigs roaming and feeding on rubbish. However, allegations that the animals were dying from severe neglect or disease could not be independently confirmed.
‎
‎The local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said it had been monitoring pig-keeping sites since November, 2025. Its inspections identified concerns mainly involving unsanitary surroundings, poor conditions in some cases, inadequate shelter and occasional lack of water, although inspectors did not find evidence of widespread starvation, overcrowding or actively dying pigs. The organisation has since resumed inspections and is working with municipal authorities and veterinary services to address welfare concerns.
‎
‎Meanwhile, municipal officials confirmed that carcasses had been removed and examined by a veterinarian. The affected animals were mainly piglets, and post-mortem examinations found pneumonia as the cause of death. Authorities said there was no confirmed case of African swine fever in the area and that the owners responsible for disposing of the carcasses in the pond and bush had not been identified.
‎
‎Improper disposal of animal carcasses in open spaces or water bodies is prohibited and could result in fines or other enforcement action if those responsible are identified. The municipality and SPCA plan further inspections, while authorities are also working with animal welfare organisations on initiatives to improve conditions and explore alternatives to pig farming in the area.
