A suspected outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in Yambio County, Western Equatoria State, South Sudan, has killed at least 148 pigs and threatened the livelihoods of affected farming households. Several farmers reportedly lost their entire herds within days, leaving families without an important source of income for food, education and other basic needs. Affected farmers are appealing for urgent government and humanitarian assistance, including support to restock their herds.
Authorities have recorded pig deaths on seven farms across Yambio and Gangura, prompting the deployment of veterinary officers to investigate the outbreak with technical support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Samples collected from affected pigs have been submitted for laboratory testing to confirm whether ASF is responsible, although clinical signs observed in the field strongly suggest the disease.
While laboratory confirmation is still pending, farmers have been urged to isolate pigs showing signs of illness immediately to help prevent further transmission. Organisations distributing pigs have also been urged to source animals from disease-free areas, while affected communities need support to recover their livelihoods and strengthen measures to prevent further spread.
