An outbreak of African swine fever has placed the West Region of Cameroon on high alert after cases were confirmed in Bafoussam and Mbouda. Veterinary authorities have launched an emergency response aimed at containing the disease and preventing its spread to other pig-producing areas.

‎Containment measures include the humane culling of infected pigs, the safe disposal of carcasses through burning and burial, restrictions on the movement of pigs and pork products from affected areas, and intensive farm inspections to detect any further infections. These actions are intended to create a protective barrier around the outbreak zones and limit transmission.

‎Although African swine fever poses no risk to human health, it is highly lethal to pigs, with mortality rates that can approach 100 per cent. As there is no commercially available vaccine or treatment, farmers have been urged to remain vigilant for symptoms such as high fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, skin discolouration, abortions in pregnant sows and sudden deaths, while reporting suspected cases without delay.

‎Authorities have also reinforced the importance of strict biosecurity, advising farmers to restrict farm access, disinfect vehicles, equipment and footwear, avoid feeding untreated food waste to pigs, quarantine newly purchased animals and prevent contact with wild animals. Officials warned that, while the culling of infected pigs is difficult, it is essential to safeguard the wider pig industry and minimise the economic impact on farmers, traders and the pork supply chain.
