26-May-2026 (today)Residents of Maun and nearby villages have been ordered to remove pigs from residential properties following a directive issued by the North West District Council (NWDC). In a clarification notice dated April 27, 2026, the council said keeping pigs in residential areas breaches local by-laws on public health, sanitation and proper land use.
Authorities stated that residents keeping pigs at home must relocate the animals to approved farming zones identified by the Physical Planning Office. The council said the measure is intended to improve sanitation standards, reduce nuisance complaints and preserve the intended use of residential areas.
Residents were given until May 15, 2026 to comply with the directive, after which inspections were scheduled to begin on May 16, 2026. Officials warned that those who fail to remove their pigs could face enforcement measures which includes the removal of animals, fines and possible prosecution under council regulations.
While the move may affect small-scale pig farmers who rear livestock within residential neighbourhoods, the council maintains that the action is necessary to safeguard public health and ensure orderly community development.
