Africa advances Livestock genetics and breeding strategy

Africa is advancing its livestock sector through a strategic focus on structured breeding programmes, genomics, and modern technologies, alongside stronger regional collaboration and improved policy frameworks. Central to the approach is the need to empower farmers as custodians of vital genetic resources, reinforcing their role in building sustainable and productive livestock systems.

The official launch of the book titled African Livestock Genetic Resources and Sustainable Breeding Strategies: Unlocking a Treasure Trove and Guide for Improved Productivity, marks a significant milestone in the continent’s livestock development journey. The framework provides a robust scientific foundation and clear strategic direction to harness genetic potential in support of food security, economic development, and climate resilience.

The event brought together leading institutions, including the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the African Animal Breeding Network (AABNet), as well as prominent scientists and policymakers working at the forefront of livestock development. The initiative highlights Africa’s readiness to unlock the full value of its livestock biodiversity. Emphasis has been placed on translating scientific knowledge into practical, sustainable systems that will enhance farmer livelihoods, strengthen rural economies and deliver long term benefits for communities across the continent.
