The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming the livestock sector through strategic partnerships aimed at boosting productivity, strengthening food security and expanding economic opportunities. Officials say the initiative aligns with a national livestock transformation strategy designed to modernise production systems and support a growing domestic and regional demand for meat, dairy, poultry and leather products in Nigeria.
The ministry noted that the sector’s development is being guided by the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy, which focuses on improving animal health services, expanding feed and fodder supply and strengthening competitive livestock value chains. Plans are underway to rehabilitate hundreds of animal farms, turning them into modern livestock hubs complete with veterinary services, upgraded infrastructure, and renewable energy systems.
On this premise the international development partners and agricultural organisations are supporting the initiative through programmes that promote climate smart livestock farming, improved breeding and resilient production systems. The collaboration aims to enhance livestock productivity, improve rural livelihoods and unlock broader market opportunities across Africa, including through the African Continental Free Trade Area.
