The European Commission has adopted Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/2489, applicable until 28 February 2026, establishing provisional emergency measures following the first confirmation of African swine fever (ASF) in Spain, specifically in Catalonia, on 28 November 2025.

According to the regulation, Spain must establish an infected zone for ASF. This area includes the regions of the Vallès Occidental, Vallès Oriental, Baix Llobregat, Barcelonès, Maresme, Alt Penedès, Anoia, and Bages, which are officially defined as infected areas.

It should be noted that at this time, the Osona and Lluçanès regions, one of the areas with the highest concentration and productive relevance of the Catalan swine industry, are not included in the infected area delimited by the European Commission.

The Commission stresses the urgency of implementing these measures to curb the spread of the virus at a time when its presence in the EU poses a serious and persistent risk.

The decision will be reviewed at the next meeting of the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed, where it will be analyzed whether it is necessary to adjust or expand the measures adopted.
