IITA- Govt partnership to spur growth in Nigeria’s livestock Industry

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has formalised a strategic collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) to transform Nigeria’s livestock sector. This partnership focuses on research collaboration, innovation scaling, and capacity development, aimed at enhancing feed and fodder production, promoting youth engagement, empowering women, and integrating the One Health approach to ensure a sustainable and productive livestock ecosystem.

The partnership was officially announced on October 16, 2025 during a high-level meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, between International Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Federal Ministry of Livestock Development representatives.

In response to the collaboration, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development commended the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture’s leadership in agricultural research, noting that the Ministry is implementing a long-term livestock transformation framework designed to modernise the sector by improving production systems, empowering smallholders, and promoting inclusivity.

In conclusion, IITA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the government’s livestock transformation agenda through science-based solutions that drive sustainable development and sectoral growth.
