Ghana set to rehabilitate 7 livestock breeding stations

The Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), has announced plans to rehabilitate seven national livestock breeding stations under the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) 2025–2028. The initiative which forms part of the broader Livestock Development and Expansion Plan, seeks to restock the facilities and boost their capacity utilisation from below 15 percent to at least 50 percent.

Stakeholders and livestock associations have long raised concerns about the neglect of these stations by successive governments. Despite limited attention in recent years, the breeding stations have provided improved stock and extension services to farmers. However, poor maintenance has contributed to increased reliance on livestock imports.

The sector continues to face challenges such as animal diseases, inadequate veterinary services, theft and pasture shortages, which undermine farmer productivity and livelihoods. Other pressing issues include limited access to finance, poor infrastructure and related constraints across the sector.
