Portugal: data on the trade of pigs and pork products between January and September 2014

According to the Portuguese GPP (Planning, Policies and General Administration Cabinet), during the first nine months of 2014, the total pig sector exports, including live animals, fell by 3.8% (42,291 tonnes in 2014 versus 43,961 tonnes in 2013), whilst the imports rose by 7.6% (188,256 tonnes in 2014 versus 174.917 tonnes in 2013).

Regarding imports:

• Live pigs (breeders not included): 88.752 tonnes (82,232 tones in 2013). A rise by 7.9%.
• Fresh / chilled pork: 70,376 tonnes (69,800 tonnes in 2013). A rise by 0.8%.
• Frozen pork: 27,428 tonnes (20,789 tonnes in 2013). A rise by 31.9%.
• Offal: It was the only product with a drop in imports (18.9%), with a total of 1,700 tonnes in 2014 and 2,096 tonnes in 2013.

Regarding exports:

• Live pigs (breeders not included): 10,122 tones were exported in 2014, versus 10,926 tonnes in 2013 (- 7.4%).
• Fresh / chilled pork: 11,147 tonnes in 2014 and 10,853 tonnes in 2013 (a rise by 2.7%).
• Frozen pork: 9,459 tonnes in 2014 and 11,061 tonnes in 2013 (a drop by 14.5%).
• Offal: 8,064 tonnes in 2014 and 7,667 tonnes in 2013 (a rise by 5,2%).
