Spain: slight drop in the swine census in May 2012 with respect to year 2011

According to the latest data published by the Spanish Agriculture Ministry, the May 2012 swine census was of 25,161,080 animals, including the Iberian pigs.

From this total 7,233,721 are piglets; 6,096,187 are pigs of between 20 and 49 kg live weight; 9,430,990 are fattening pigs; 42,706 are boars and 2,357.476 are sows.

With regard to the autonomous communities, Catalonia is still the one with the highest swine census (6,989,973), followed by Aragón (5.778.093) and Castilla y León (3,306,598). These three autonomous communities add up more than the 60% of the Spanish total swine census.

With regard to the May 2011 (25,608,398) and November 2011 (25,634,869) total swine census a drop of approximately a 1.74% and a 1.85%, respectively, is seen. With respect to the sows’ census there is a 2.8% drop with respect to the May 2011 census (2,425,259) and a 1.95% drop with respect to the November 2011 census (2,404,304).
