Ireland: pig numbers up

According to the latest pig survey published by the Statistical Office of Ireland, the total number of pigs in Ireland in June 2012 was estimated at 1,570,600. This represents an increase of 1.4% since June 2011.

The number of breeding pigs decreased by 6.7% while non-breeding pig numbers increased by 2.3% in the same period.

A comparison of the June 2011 and June 2012 figures shows that in the breeding category the number of: 

• Other Sows for breeding decreased by 18.9%.
• Sows in pig decreased by 6.6%.
